Email Security and Spam Filters

Email security and spam filters are placed at the perimeter of your security network. When an email is sent containing a virus it originates in one of two ways.

First: Someone you know and trust has unknowingly contracted a computer virus and because of a fault with their antivirus software they have sent an infected message to you

Two: Malicious email is being sent into your domain name by parties using attacks to sniff out email addresses or just by using common email addresses. Spammers use all sorts of tactics to get emails to you.

In order to prevent these attacks we can undertake certain precautions.

• Install a gateway antivirus system that will remove harmful attachments from all emails at the server before arriving at your PC.

• Install a spam filter on your server to prevent 99% of spam entering your network.

• Protect your network with a firewall (a security device screening unwanted entry at your network perimeter) that will prevent spammers discovering your email addresses

• Make all your email addresses less simple to deduce - i.e. firstname.secondname@domain.suffix to avoid easily guessed names like john@work.com
